Bruce began Karate in 1972, he achieved Black Belt 1st Dan in 1975, and he is currently a 6th Dan Black Belt awarded to him by Sensei Ticky Donovan 9th Dan in 2008.

His first dojo was at the Chelsea Life Saving Club, in 1975, it moved to the Seaford in 1980.

Bruce had a competition career that spanned from 1975 - with a nineteen-year hiatus from 1986 to 2005. He has competed 53 "OPEN" Championships winning 17, placing second 11 times and placing third 11 times. Bruce place third at the Asian Pacific Karate Championships in 1985, winning the AKF National and State championship the same year. Returning to competition in 2005 winning National All Styles National and State Championships.

Appointed State Coach in 1987 and Senior State Coach from 1989 to 2000,in 2009 was interim Head Kumite Coach the appointed Head Kumite for three years 2010 to 2012.

National Coach from 1992 to 2005, coaching 15 Australian teams at International events including both Senior and [2] Junior World Championships.
